Week 4 Vocabulary Terms Due Wed. April 16th.

Find any total of 6 vocabulary terms from chapter 9 and 10 and define them. You ccannot post any terms that have been posted prior to your post; so please check the blog prior to posting.

nuclear family-A family consisting of parents and their children and
grandparents of a marital partner.

Broken Home-a family in which the parents have separated or divorce.

Child abuse-the physical or emotional or sexual mistreatment of children.

Gang- A group of teenagers or young adults forming a more or
less formalized group associating for social purposes, in some cases requiring initiation rites to join.

Barrio-a Spanish-speaking quarter in a town or city

Skinhead-a young person who belongs to a British or American group that shave their heads and gather at rock concerts or engage in whitesupremacist demonstrations.

Chapter 7
1) Nuclear family- A family unit composed of parents and their children; this smaller family structure is subject to great stress due to the intense, close contact between parents and children.
2) Broken Home- Home in which one or both parents are absent due to divorce or separation; children in such an environment may be prone to antisocial behavior.
3) Blended Families- Nuclear families that are the product of divorce and remarriage, blending one parent from each of two families and their combined children into one family unit.

Chapter 8
1) Cliques- Small groups of friends who share intimate knowledge and confidences.
2) Crowds- Loosely organized groups who share interests, and activities.
3) Controversial Status Youth- Aggressive kids who are either highly liked or intensely disliked by their peers and who are the ones most likely to become engaged in antisocial behavior.

Chapter 7

1) Intra-family Violence- An environment of discord and conflict within the family; children who grow up in dysfunctional homes often exhibit delinquent behaviors, having learned at a young age that aggression pays off.

2) Resource Dilution- A condition that occurs when parents have such large families that their resources, such as time and money, are spread too thin, causing lack of familial support and control.

3) Battered Child Syndrome- Non-accidental physical injury of children by their parents or guardians.

Chapter 8

1) Near-Groups- Clusters of youth who, outwardly, seem unified, but actually have limited cohesion, impermanence, minimal consensus of norms, shifting membership, disturbed leadership, and limited definitions of membership expectations.

2) Interstitial Group- delinquent group that fills a crack in the social fabric and maintains standard group practices.

3) Disorganized Neighborhood- Inner-city areas of extreme poverty where the critical social control mechanisms have broken down.

1)parental efficiacy- families in which parents are able to intergrate their children into the household unit while at the same time helping assert their indivduality and regulate their own behavior.

2)neglect- passive neglect by a parent or guardian, depriving children of foood,shelter,health care and love.

3)abandonment- parents physcally leave their children with the intention of completely serving the parent-child relationship.

4) dispostion hearing-the social service agency presents its case plan and recommendations for care of the child and treatment of the parents, including incareration and counseling or other treatment.

5)disorganizing neghborhood-inner-city areas of extreme poverty where the critical social control mechanisms have brokn down.

6)kikas-subgroups of same-aged youths in Hispanic gangs that remain together and have seperate names and a unique identity in hte gang.

1.Blended families are less stable than those famioies consisting of two biological parents.
2.Familicide mass murders and which a spouse and one or more children are slained.
3.Advisement hearing:is a temporary protective hearing in which the court will review the facts and determine whether the removal of the child is justified and then notify parents of the charges against them.
4.Review hearing are held to determine if the conditions of the case plan are bein met.
5.Hearsay are usally out of court statements made by one person and recounted in court in court by another and these such statements are nt allowed in court except in child abuse cases where the child has stated to a social worker,teacher or any other role model figure.
6.Grafatti is where the kids that think they belong to a gang or a click writing messages and marking their turf.

Representing- tossing or flashing gain signs in the presence of rivals which often escalates confrontation.
Graffiti- inscriptions or drawing made on a wall or structure being used by deliquents by definition.
Advisement hearing- preliminary protective or temporary custody hearing in which facts, determine whether removal of child is justified.
Pre-trial conference- the attorney for the social services agency presents an overview bargain or negotiated settlement which can be agreed to in a consent decree.
